Tried to be a jester
Turned out to be a clown
I wanted to dance like Fred Astaire
But I looked like Joe E. Brown
Tappin down the stairs with my cane & hat
She's wearing that red satin gown
The music of that time sounds so sweet
It surely does ease my frown
Ch: Then in my dream I falter
For just there in the mist
The silver screen turns yellow
Light comes up all around
Engines squeal and then they roar
Propellors turn and blur
There's Ingrid waving from the window
The mist begins to stir
There's Bogey looking tough then he's sorry
Smoke is curling from his lips
The plane lifts off for foreign parts
Disappearing into the mist
I escape through dreamy coloured clouds
In nightly movie dreams
Surrounded by silhouetted crowds
Suspended in projector beams
Woke up in the greying dawn
Recall that far off dream
There were women in horse-drawn chariots
Centaurs in matching teams
Cowboys with snaking lariats
Roping cotton clouds
The sun peeks throught the curtains
My orange cat winks at me and meows
Then in my dream I falter
For right there in the mist
I pull my hat down over my eyes
Like Bogey going to a tryst
Then in my dream I falter
For just there in the mist
The silver screen turns yellow
Light comes up all around
